More: Web Editing and Proofing list

A proofing checklist can save copyeditors a great deal of time and effort. It should be used for both redesigns and regular updates. What you check depends on how your site is published; hand-authored or converted pages will require more detailed checking than those generated from a database.

Remember to proof a subset of pages on all the platforms, browsers and screen resolutions you expect your audience to use.  And as in all publishing processes, you should refrain from making edits at this final stage.

Links

  • Do they work? Go to the correct page?
  • Is the link text accurate?
  • Is mouseover text present?
  • Does the page display in the correct window?
  • Does “Back” work?
  • For links to non-Web pages, are correct file size and format indicated?
  • Are “See Also” links appropriate? Are any missing?

Formatting

  • Are the fonts correct (typeface, bold)?
  • Are all navigation elements present?
  • Are graphics present? Does each have appropriate alt text?
  • Do tables display correctly?
  • Is the page too long?
  • Is the most important information above the fold?
  • Is the “last updated” date correct?
  • Is text legible when browser font size is changed?

Search

  • Does the page appear in the results list, with the appropriate priority or ranking?
  • Is the correct title displayed?
  • Is the description useful?
  • Has the page been added to indexes, tables of contents?
